In the last decade, socially responsible investment assets have grown 4 percent faster than the entire universe of managed assets in the United States, according to the Social Investment Forum, a nonprofit membership organization that promotes socially responsible investments. Last year, these assets were worth $2.29 trillion, up from $639 billion in 1995.

House lawmakers this week are expected to introduce a bill that would prohibit retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores and The Home Depot from offering financial services. The bill would prevent companies that aren't already in financial services from forming industrial loan companies.
