Wal-Mart hopes to expand financial services for low-income customers

Wal-Mart Stores has "only scratched the surface of what's possible" in providing financial services, a senior official at the retailer told a banking industry conference last month. Wal-Mart plans to expand services such as check cashing and bill paying -- all aimed at "underbanked" customers -- even as it awaits regulatory approval of an industrial bank charter.
