Real-Time Collaboration Gets Real

Real-time collaboration, or presence, will become the "focal point" of the desktop for Procter & Gamble employees, says the company's director of computers and communications services. Rather than ending a task to collaborate with co-workers, employees can connect with others directly within applications. P&G is using several Microsoft products that let its employees escalate instant messages to Web conferences, for example. Not only do collaboration tools improve productivity, but they give far-flung colleagues — and sometimes partners and customers — a sense of community.
