Emerging Markets for Cell Phones, Services Will Be Big Business
The rapid growth of cellular networks means that folks working and traveling in developing countries are finding it easier to phone home. And lower manufacturing costs are leading vendors to begin offering new handsets in these markets rather than recycling used devices from developed nations. The GSM Association's Emerging Market Handset Program is pushing for sub-$30 handsets to meet the needs of these countries, which are far more basic than their first world counterparts. Most cellular providers see China as a sleeping tiger that is about to awaken, largely because of the 400 million handsets that will be sold there between now and 2009. Vendors like Motorola, while recognizing the opportunity in emerging markets, are concerned about lower margins on phones and services.
