WEEK IN REVIEW
====================================
1. Who's Afraid of Google? Everyone.
From Wired.com (Topic: Google), Nov. 29:
It seems no one is safe: Google is doing Wi-Fi; Google is
searching inside books; Google has a plan for ecommerce.
Of course, Google has always wanted to be more than a
search engine. Even in the early days, its ultimate goal was
extravagant: to organize the world's information. High-minded
as that sounds, Google's ever-expanding agenda has put it on
a collision course with nearly every company in the information
technology industry: Amazon.com, Comcast, eBay, Yahoo!,
even Microsoft.

2. Spitzer Gets on Sony BMG's Case
From Business Week (Topic: Digital Rights Management), Nov. 29:
Sony BMG Music Entertainment is getting a lot of unwanted
attention for its use of copyright-protection software that left
CD users open to computer viruses. It began with the bloggers,
who shed light on the matter, and has spread to the scads of
consumers who have used the Internet to urge a boycott of
Sony BMG CDs.

3. Supreme Court to Hear eBay Patent Appeal
From MSNBC.com (Topic: Patents), Nov. 28:
The Supreme Court said Monday that it would consider an
appeal by online auctioneer eBay Inc. in a case that could
determine when it is appropriate to grant an injunction
against a patent infringer. EBay, found to have infringed an
e-commerce patent held by MercExchange for fixed-price
sales, is asking whether an appeals court erred in deciding a
permanent injunction must generally be issued once infringement
of a valid patent has been determined.

4. Internet Phone 911 Deadline Passes
From CNN (Topic: VoIP), Nov. 28:
Companies that provide Internet-based phone service could be
barred from signing up new customers in at least some areas for
failing to meet a federal mandate to provide reliable emergency
911 service in all their markets.

5. Wireless Moves the Cash Register Where You Are
From The New York Times (Topic: Mobile Commerce), Nov. 26:
(Registration Required)
When Michelle Dube, a golf instructor in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.,
finishes a lesson, she whips out her BlackBerry wireless device--to
schedule the next appointment, sure, but also to swipe the student's
credit card for payment right there on the driving range. It takes only
a few seconds, and it saves Ms. Dube a trip to the bank to deposit a
check or a fistful of cash. Plus, her clients like it. "They're just
surprised--they're like, 'Wow, you're a techno-wizard,'" she said.

6. Hitachi, MasterCard to set up Smart Card Venture
From Reuters (Topic: Smart Cards), Nov. 24:
Hitachi said on Friday that it would set up a joint venture this month
with MasterCard International, Australia's Keycorp and a U.S. venture
capital firm to promote advanced smart cards.

7. Renewed Warning of Bandwidth Hoarding
From The Washington Post (Topic: Bandwidth), Nov. 24:
(Registration Required)
A couple of years ago, a group of big technology companies got
together and issued a public alarm about the future of the Internet:
Those who own the wires that get us online, the companies said,
should not be able to pick and choose what Web content and
services we can see and use. Just as electric companies can't cut
deals with electronics makers to allow only some products to
work, the Internet should have similar, guaranteed "network
neutrality," argued tech firms such as Amazon.com, Microsoft
and Yahoo.

8. Applications Are Outward-Bound
From eWeek (Topic: Mobility), Nov. 21:
Mobile applications are the fastest-growing opportunity and
challenge for developers, who are finally getting both the tools
they need and the consensus on good practice that liberates them
to do their best work.
